Spring 2019: Child & Youth Weekly Programs

We offer a range of programs for school aged students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each class focuses on different materials and techniques. The Spring 2019 Term Programs are listed below. Each class is one day per week.

Spring Term runs Saturday, March 30 - Friday, June 7. Monday classes run April 1 - June 10.

Monday classes are cancelled for Easter Monday (April 22) and Victoria Day (May 20).

The program fees include all materials, taxes are extra.

aRT EXPLORATIONS *NEW*

In this exciting new course, students will be introduced to five distinct disciplines: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture. We will create 2 and 3-dimensional works of art that allow students to explore a wide variety of materials and techniques. Whether you’re brand new to art or want to try your hand at a diverse materials and techniques, this is the perfect class to try!

Start with Art: JK/SK

Give your beginning artist the opportunity to learn the basics of art-making and appreciation. These one hour classes focus on the process of creating 2 and 3-dimensional works of art and teach your child new ways of expressing themselves, solving problems and working with others.

Cartooning & illustration

Does your child love to draw? In this class students will learn all kinds of techniques for drawing people, animals and other creatures with expression and skill. Many different media will be explored including pencil, marker, pen and ink, paint and more. Students will also learn about effective narrative structure and how to illustrate their own ideas.

Drawing

Students will learn fundamental drawing techniques like shading and one-point perspective, and will use these skills to create realistic and imaginative drawings. In this class we will use a variety of mediums including graphite, charcoal, conte, pen and ink, markers and pastels.

CREATE wITh clay

In this class, students will work with clay, polymer clay, plaster and found art materials as they explore 3-dimensional art. Students will learn proportion, design, and construction to create both functional and sculptural works of art.

Spring 2019: 10 Week Term
This course is offerened in the Winter 2019 term.

Painting: Watercolour & Acrylic

In this class, students will learn colour theory, composition and painting techniques for watercolour and acrylic paints. Students will create realistic and abstract works on paper and canvas as they learn about contemporary and historic painters.

Clay & Colour

Kids will go on an adventure into the fun and colourful world of polymer clay sculpting.  Students will plan and create 3-dimensional works including all kinds of animals and imaginary creatures and build them into worlds layered with colour and texture.

DRAWING & PAINTING

Students in this class will be introduced to a variety of drawing and painting techniques. Learning to draw using perspective, shading and proper proportion will help students draw realistically, and will provide a solid foundation for developing their painting skills. Using watercolour and acrylic paints, students will learn colour theory and proper painting technique as they explore realistic and abstract painting.

art fundamentals grades 6-8

Through drawing and painting skill development, students will work their way from an idea to a finished work of art. They will complete three original pieces of art in ten weeks.

Each term during the school year centres on a different discipline within art and the Fall term will focus on drawing. The Winter and Spring terms will progress into Painting and Mixed Media and students will be encouraged to produce work that is increasingly complex and original. 

This course is ideal for students who may be interested in applying to arts focused secondary schools as many of the portfolio requirements will be met.

Manga & Anime

In this exciting class students will learn the specific skills and techniques for drawing popular characters and creating their own in this traditional Japanese style. Students will also work on story development, backgrounds, layouts and lettering for their own comics. 

Spring 2019: 10 Week Term
This course is offered in the Winter 2019 term.

Art Fundamentals grades 9-12

This course emphasizes skill development in a range of core visual arts techniques. Realistic drawing and painting, printmaking and sculpture will be taught with a different conceptual focus during each ten week term.

Students are encouraged to produce highly original and complex work that shows evidence of their creative process from idea, to sketch to finished work.

This course is ideal for high school students considering applying to post secondary art programs. Individual portfolio requirements can be fulfilled.

High School Oil Painting *New*

Students will learn colour theory, perspective and paint application techniques for painting in oil. Students will start with painting using a limited palette and learn important elements of composition to create a work of art.
