Child & Youth Weekly Programs

We offer a range of programs for school aged students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each class focuses on different materials and techniques. The Spring 2018 Term Programs are listed below. Each class is one day per week, for a 10 week term. Monday classes are cancelled for Easter Monday, April 2 and Victoria Day, May 21.

The program fees include all materials, taxes are extra.

Drawing

Students will learn fundamental drawing techniques like shading and one-point perspective, and will use these skills to create realistic and imaginative drawings. In this class we will use a variety of mediums including graphite, charcoal, conte, pen and ink, markers and pastels.

Start with Art

Give your beginning artist the opportunity to learn the basics of art-making and appreciation. These one hour classes focus on the process of creating 2 and 3-dimensional works of art and teach your child new ways of expressing themselves, solving problems and working with others.

Drawing Fundamentals

This class will focus on realistic drawing techniques. Students will learn shading, perspective, proportion, figure drawing and portraiture. Using a variety of materials including graphite, charcoal, conte, pen and ink, markers and pastels, students will create a series of realistic drawings.

Drawing and Painting

A focused course in realistic drawing and painting. Students will learn about and practice proportion, shading and perspective to begin to create more compositions in dry media. These ideas will then be applied to painting with watercolour and acrylic. Students will be inspired by images from real life as well as the work of well-known artists.

Sculpture

In this class, students will work with clay, polymer clay, plaster and found art materials as they explore 3-dimensional art. Students will learn proportion, design, and construction to create both functional and sculptural works of art.

Painting & Mixed Media

In this class students will learn colour theory, composition and painting techniques for watercolour and acrylic. Work will then progress to include other techniques such as printmaking, collage and sculpture.

Cartooning and Illustration

Does your child love to draw? In this class students will learn all kinds of techniques for drawing people, animals and other creatures with expression and skill. Many different media will be explored including pencil, marker, pen and ink, paint and more. Students will also learn about effective narrative structure and how to illustrate their own ideas.

Clay & Colour

Kids will go on an adventure into the fun and colourful world of polymer clay sculpting.  Students will plan and create 3-dimensional works including all kinds of animals and imaginary creatures and build them into worlds layered with colour and texture.

Manga & Anime

In this exciting class students will learn the specific skills and techniques for drawing popular characters and creating their own in this traditional Japanese style. Students will also work on story development, backgrounds, layouts and lettering for their own comics.

art fundamentals grades 6-8

Through drawing and painting skill development, students will work their way from an idea to a finished work of art. They will complete three original pieces of art in ten weeks.

Each term during the school year centres on a different discipline within art and the Fall term will focus on drawing. The Winter and Spring terms will progress into Painting and Mixed Media and students will be encouraged to produce work that is increasingly complex and original. 

This course is ideal for students who may be interested in applying to arts focused secondary schools as many of the portfolio requirements will be met. 

Grades 6-8

Art Fundamentals grades 9-12

This course emphasizes skill development in a range of core visual arts techniques. Realistic drawing and painting, printmaking and sculpture will be taught with a different conceptual focus during each ten week term.

Students are encouraged to produce highly original and complex work that shows evidence of their creative process from idea, to sketch to finished work.

This course is ideal for high school students considering applying to post secondary art programs. Individual portfolio requirements can be fulfilled. 

Grades 9-12
