Child & Youth Weekly Programs

We offer a range of programs for school aged students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each class focuses on different materials and techniques. The Spring 2017 Term Programs are listed below. Each class is one day per week, for a 10 week term. The program fees include all materials, taxes are extra.

Students will learn essential drawing skills like proportion, perspective and shading to produce realistic and imaginative work. Subject matter will be a combination of teacher-led compositions like still life and student-led like illustration for stories and comics.

Start with art           

Give your beginning artist the opportunity to learn the basics of art-making and appreciation. These one hour classes focus on the process of creating 2 and 3-dimensional works of art and teach your child new ways of expressing themselves, solving problems and working with others.

Painting & Mixed Media

In this class students will learn colour theory, composition and painting techniques for watercolour and acrylic. Work will then progress to include other techniques such as printmaking, collage and sculpture.

Drawing & Painting

A focused course in realistic drawing and painting. Students will learn about and practice proportion, shading and perspective to begin to create more compositions in dry media. These ideas will then be applied to painting with watercolour and acrylic. Students will be inspired by images from real life as well as the work of well-known artists.

3D Design

Calling all future designers! This class is all about imagining and creating 3-dimensional objects that we can really use. Students will make simple functional objects out of clay like mugs and bowls with an emphasis on originality. We will explore conceptual design ideas by making models and miniatures from wood, plaster and polymer clay.

Clay & Colour

Kids will go on an adventure into the fun and colourful world of polymer clay sculpting.  Students will plan and create 3-dimensional works including all kinds of animals and imaginary creatures and build them into worlds layered with colour and texture.

art fundamentals grades 6-8

Through drawing and painting skill development, students will work their way from an idea to a finished work of art. They will complete three original pieces of art in ten weeks.

Each term during the school year centres on a different discipline within art and the Fall term will focus on drawing. The Winter and Spring terms will progress into Painting and Mixed Media and students will be encouraged to produce work that is increasingly complex and original. 

This course is ideal for students who may be interested in applying to arts focused secondary schools as many of the portfolio requirements will be met.

Art Fundamentals grades 9-12

This course emphasizes skill development in a range of core visual arts techniques. Realistic drawing and painting, printmaking and sculpture will be taught with a different conceptual focus during each ten week term.

Students are encouraged to produce highly original and complex work that shows evidence of their creative process from idea, to sketch to finished work.

This course is ideal for high school students considering applying to post secondary art programs. Individual portfolio requirements can be fulfilled. 

Grades 9-12
