Fall 2019 Adult Programs

We have classes for adults who have always wanted to learn to draw or paint and those who enjoy being creative and want to try something new. Programs start the week of September 30, 2019.  All classes are either 5 weeks or 10 weeks for the Fall Session. Materials are not included in course fees unless otherwise stated. A downloadable materials for each class is available.

We also offer 3 week workshops on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00. See  Workshop Wednesdays for more information. For a single evening of art in a relaxed and fun atmosphere go to Adult Art Nights.

Drawing from life: beginner

Students will learn to draw what they see in correct proportions and then bring their drawing to life through the use of shading and perspective. A variety of drawing materials will be used including graphite, charcoal, conte, pastel and pen and ink.

Acrylic painting: Beginner

Acrylic paint is one of the most versatile, exciting and forgiving mediums for artists from beginners to professionals. Because of its fast drying time it is a great way to create satisfying works of art.

Learn the basic and fundamental techniques for painting with acrylics. Through a variety of projects, this course introduces students to paint application methods, brushwork and colour theory for successful compositions. Some simple drawing will be done but no previous experience is necessary.

Acrylic painting: intermediate

In this intermediate session, students will work on more challenging compositions and further explore colour theory and paint application techniques to develop an artistic voice.

Ceramic sculpture studio

After learning the basics of handling clay, participants will choose to focus on making functional ceramics or sculptural work. You will have the opportunity to learn the potters wheel for creating bowls, vases and bottles or develop your hand at making figurative and artistic work in clay. Classes are small enough for participants to get individualized instruction.

Pieces will be fired in our kiln and then various finishing methods will be explored.

watercolour workshop

Students will be introduced to watercolour painting by exploring a variety of techniques. Lessons will focus on colour theory, brushwork and composition.

introduction to encaustic

An introduction to the age-old technique of wax painting! This course will introduce you to a different encaustic technique every week. We will experiment with colour, fire, collage, image transfer, and many other techniques! *

*Experienced students are welcome to use this class as a studio space.

Fall 2019: 10 Week Term

Thursdays, 1:00-3:00. October 3-December 5. $399, includes most materials, HST extra.*

*Course fee includes a $75 materials charge which includes wax, encaustic medium, use of oil paints for pigments, drawing materials, papers for collage, etc.

** Students must bring their own paint scraper. These can be purchased at any hardware or paint store for under $5.

*** Students must also bring in one 8''x10'' cradled wood panel as a surface for their final project. Smaller wood panels for introductory exercises are included in the class fee.

abstract acrylic painting

In this workshop-style class students will explore various techniques for creating abstract works with acrylic paint. Demonstrations will be provided to strengthen student understanding of composition, colour theory and paint application techniques.

With guidance, students will work through projects at their own pace and begin to develop a stronger visual voice.

 The Wonderful World of Printmaking

This class will introduce students to the art of printmaking. The class will be held in three 3-week sessions. Students may choose to register for the entire term, or may select only one or two of these sessions.

Each session will focus on a specific end-project:
Session 1 will teach students how to print their own cards.
Session 2 will explore the tiling technique of printmaking, which can be used to design wrapping paper and wallpaper (amongst other things!).
Session 3 will introduce students to fabric printing. In each of these sessions, students will learn to create and carve their own linoleum blocks. We will also experiment with other types of printing blocks, such as Styrofoam and collograph blocks.
